This building used to be Bishop Spencer College For Girls.The Spencerian Condominium destroyed by fire. Luckily, nobody was injured but dozens were left homeless.

 

 

 

 

The wooden structure was built in the 1890's after the last great fire.Fire is always a concern for residents of the downtown area. St. John's has burnt to the ground a couple of times..the last just over 100 years ago.

The narrows is what it's name implies.A Russian cruise ship about to be guided out through the narrows by the Harbour Pilot.

 

 

What a day!!!80 centimeters of snow fell on Monday, April 6. The most snow in a 24 hour period since the 50's. It was all gone in a couple of days.

 

 

This is where the Royal St. John's Regatta is held in August.Feeding the ducks at Quidi Vidi Lake in late January 1999. Not much snow this year.

 

 

This wooden church was built in 1836.St. Thomas's Church surrounded by beautiful fall colours.

 

 

 

Sometimes fog is quite beautiful.Later that same week...

 

 

 

Boaters don't get too close...these things tip over sometimes!A nice iceberg out between Cape Spear and Fort Amherst. This one is probably grounded. Only about 1/8 of the iceberg is above the surface.

 

 

There are old cannons in the bunkers on the left that would protect the harbour from enemy ships.Fort Amherst used to guard the entrance to St. John's Harbour known as "The Narrows".

 

 

Colonial Building is now the home of the Newfoundland & Labrador Archive.The Colonial Building. Where the Government of Newfoundland sat before confederation with Canada.

 

 

If you look closely, you might see Premier Tobin waving from his office window :-)The seat of government in the province since we joined Canada, Confederation Building.
